Resin producing trees like the Aquilaria Crassna, are endangered throughout their known habitats across Southeast Asia. The main reason for L.A.I.D. operating its own plantations in the Lao PDR is to protect against unsustainable harvesting of natural forests that are resulting in the near extinction of this tree genus in the Lao PDR and elsewhere. Aquilaria Crassna is now listed as a protected species in the Lao PDR.
L.A.I.D. trades and harvests according to the regulations set by CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species).
